Press Release Summary = UGA's early admissions programs has grown nearly double from 2002 to this year.
Press Release Body = The University of Georgia is a large public university with 33,000 students. It received over 12,300 applications this year and admitted approximately 8,000 students, or more than 65 percent of applicants. The University System of Georgia recognizes the need to provide academically talented high school students with opportunities for acceleration of their formal academic programs. This recognition has led to the development of early admission programs. Students who apply for early admission at the University of Georgia also may apply early at other colleges and are NOT required to accept U-G-A until the regular March deadline. The University of Georgia has no plans to end its popular early admission program. Whereas Harvard University announces that beginning in 2008, its admission office will eliminate an early admission policy. Princeton University became the second elite university to drop its early admissions program. McDuff says Harvard\'s decision should have NO effect on what Georgia does. Early admission programs - which vary greatly from institution to institution - give high school seniors a jump start on the college application season, offering decisions in mid-December or early January before the regular admission process begins. But critics say they fuel the college arms race over elite students and benefit higher income students who can take early offers rather than wait to compare financial aid offers later. A student who chooses not to complete high school may apply for early admission if she/he has completed all College-Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) requirements except one unit of English and one unit of social science. In order to be accepted, an applicant must have a total SAT score of 1200 (ACT composite 27) with minimum scores of 530 SAT verbal (23 ACT English) and 500 SAT math (21 ACT Mathematics) and a high school grade point average of 3.5 in college-preparatory courses. The University of Georgia\'s \"early action\" program, is nonbinding. More than 9,000 students applied early to UGA last year, the third year the program has been in place, said Nancy McDuff, associate vice president for admissions and enrollment management. The early action program doesn\'t require students to submit an essay or list of activities, factors that have made early applications increasingly popular, she said. Students who are accepted early don\'t have to commit until the regular deadline in May. \"It doesn\'t disadvantage students in any way,\" McDuff said. \"We do it because it helps us spread out our processing load over two cycles,\" she said.
